What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

Our Boys & Girls Club means a lot of things. It provides vital support for our youth, helps build character, and allows adults to serve as mentors to help kids in our community make appropriate life choices. As a father of two boys, I am grateful for the services and programs it provides and can see the positive impact it has had and continues to have in our area.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

I wanted to help raise awareness and funds to meet the ongoing needs of the Club so it can continue to assist kids with its wide-ranging programs and services. I also wanted to see if I could perform a routine on stage for three minutes without hurting myself or my dance partner.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

My only prior dance experience was as one of the Village People in a performance of “YMCA” in high school.

How would you describe your dance moves?

As a local attorney, I take the fifth on whether my dance moves should be considered a criminal offense.

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

The Boys & Girls Clubs provide a safe, fun, and positive place to children to go while their parents are working. This is incredibly important for our community. The programs they provide after school and over the summer give children experiences and connections that last a lifetime.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

I love dancing, performing, and experiencing new things in life! Dancing for a great cause was a no-brainer!

What’s something people don’t know about you?

Both of my parents were professional celebrity impersonators.

How would you describe your dance moves?

Two words: jazz hands!

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Arizona truly put their focus on our youth. They are committed to helping our children reach their full potential in this challenging yet beautiful world. There is diversity in family dynamics and situations where parents, grandparents, and guardians work longer and harder to provide for themselves and their loved ones. It is commonplace for the family unit to have both parents working 40 or more hours per week, as well as single-parent households where the parent holds down more than one job just to make ends meet. Parents and guardians are raising their children to the best of their abilities with limited time, support, and resources. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Arizona help bridge this gap by providing a safe environment to our youth through comprehensive after-school and summer programs at affordable prices. Their programming not only provides a safe place for our youth; it provides education and opportunities in leadership, teamwork, homework assistance, book club, money management, healthy decision-making, and exercise/wellness.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

I said, “Yes” because I was approached by four beautiful women from Dancing for the Stars who walked into my office holding out a single red rose. Who could say, “No?” This is an opportunity to be part of the biggest fundraiser for date for the Boys & Girls Club and our youth. I consider it an honor to be nominated for this incredible event, and an opportunity for huge personal growth. I hope to look back on this event years from now, knowing I was able to make an impact on the growth and future of the youth in our community, as well as the fact that I was crazy enough to take this on in my mid-50s. Though I strive through Center for Physical Excellence to support our community and participate in charity and local events, I have never taken on such a personal challenge, mentally and physically. This event—and the willingness of local residents and business owners to donate without hesitation—opened my eyes to how wonderful this community is. My friends (old and new), loved ones, colleagues, and local businesses are incredibly gracious and giving. Though it continues to be a challenge to ask for donations, as I put my own insecurities aside and speak about the true focus of this event (raising money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Arizona); the fear subsides.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

I’m a survivor! Dynamite comes in small packages.

How would you describe your dance moves?

I would say they’re currently “grace-less,” however with continued practice and coaching, I will be waaaay better by the time we perform April 13.

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

The Boys & Girls Club means an opportunity for the future of community. The program gives kids the opportunity to learn and socialize with one another in safe environments. There is nothing better.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

It’s not only a great way to forever grow my dancing experience, but it’s also an opportunity to give back to a great cause and help the community out.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

I love physiology … learning how people tick! Also, most people don’t know I’ve partaken in native dances around the world, including Estonian, New Guinean, and Spanish.

How would you describe your dance moves?

Energetic, charismatic, and impactful … just like I try to be in normal life.

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

As a community, we’re lucky to have the Boys & Girls Club of Central Arizona. It provides a safe environment after school and during vacation breaks for our local children. With technology taking over our lives, the Boys & Girls Club allows the kids to just have fun, without apps, tablets, phones, etc. … just good, old-fashioned playtime like we used to have growing up. I remember playing outside, doing whatever, wherever, all day long, having to be home when the street lights came on at night … and we were safe! That wouldn’t be the case today, so I am very thankful for the Boys & Girls Club.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

I have some pretty amazing friends who have either been in my shoes as a dancer for the show, or who work with the Boys & Girls Club organization. How do you say, “no” to friends? You can’t! Even better, it’s all for the kids.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

I was a surrogate for my friend and her husband. It was the BEST, and most rewarding, decision of my life.

How would you describe your dance moves?

Prior to Dancing for the Stars: I could dance the night away with friends anywhere so (in my mind) pretty fabulous. Now, rehearsing for Dancing for the Stars: clearly not fabulous at all.

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

The Boys & Girls Club is creating the communities of the future! Having programs the Boys & Girls Club provide for youth is imperative, as children need to feel supported and safe to become happy and healthy adults. The gift of having a safe and fun place to spend time with peers after school, where learning and connections occur, will sow seeds to flourish throughout their lives.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

This is my second year participating, and I absolutely adore this fundraiser. It feels incredible to be able to help raise money for the Boys & Girls Club, and on top of it I get to work on a fun project while creating a new friendship with my dance partner. “Yes” was an easy thing to say!

What’s something people don’t know about you?

Most people would agree I am a rather open book. Most people don’t know that secretly, I’d love to be a race car driver or trapeze artist.

How would you describe your dance moves?

As a student of many various dance styles for many years, I would describe my strengths and aesthetics as a strong presence, with a natural tendency for accentuation and knack for complicated rhythms. Though my nickname is Sassy, so there is that element as well! Dance is something I live for. I hope that shines through no matter the style or dance moves.

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

It means we have a strong community, the members of which care about our children and their safety outside of school hours. It’s not just a place for kids to go; it’s also a place where they can thrive in a positive environment.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

My husband really encouraged me to go for it. Giving back to Prescott has always been important to me, especially when it comes to children.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

After graduating from Prescott High School, I lived in Long Beach, CA, Palm Beach, FL, and New York City!

How would you describe your dance moves?

Sassy and high cardio!

Zach Leonard

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

The Boys & Girls Club is a reflection of how much Prescott cares for our youth. The clubs provide a safe environment for kids and teens to develop life skills, make lasting connections, and have fun.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

When I was asked to serve our community in such a unique way doing something I love, of course I said, “Yes!” It’s a fun opportunity that supports the youth in our area.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

Though I work in medicine, I seriously considered a career in the performing arts. Fortunately, living in Prescott means I get to do both.

How would you describe your dance moves?

This year’s dance is highly stylized and relies heavily on angular, linear, and rigid movements. The song’s opening line is, “I have one thing to say, I came to slay,” and I intend to do just that.

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

The Boys & Girls Clubs mean that our kids have a safe, enriching place to go after school and during breaks. They are cared for by adults who are concerned about helping them develop into young men and women of character who will in turn continue to give back to this wonderful community.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

How can you say, “No” to the kids? I said, “yes” because I truly believe in the mission of the Boys & Girls Club. The kids of this community are so important to me and I wanted them to know that I’d do anything to help them … even dance in public.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

I’m an open book! But, most people don’t know I have a secret hobby of singing karaoke to big-hair bands. I really let it fly, like channeling Sammy Hagar and Axel Rose. And I’m addicted to Crossfit—I love it!

How would you describe your dance moves?

Magical, the stuff of dreams!

Patrick Wilcox

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

Having a vibrant Boys & Girls Club means we are investing time into a brighter future for all. It’s the butterfly effect.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

I said, “Yes” because I love what the event means for Prescott and it’s the gift that gives back to everyone involved. It’s a joy to share something with the celebrity that he or she hasn’t experienced before. Through this experience, I remember when partner dancing was new to me.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

People don’t know I’m the worm guy. And if you have to ask what that means, well, then, you’re probably not a gardener.

How would you describe your dance moves?

Making things that are difficult look easy.

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

In a small community with a limited number of activities available to kids, it’s very important to have programs like the ones offered by the Boys & Girls Club. With some kids on waiting lists it’s especially important to help support our local Clubs.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

I attended the first two events and saw what a great show it is, and how much fun everyone has. I also couldn’t believe the amount of support the community showed for this event and for the Boys & Girls Club. So when I was approached to participate I thought this was the perfect opportunity for me to contribute.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

I’ve listened to heavy metal and hard rock music since I was young. I saw KISS at the Veterans Memorial Colosseum in 1978, at age 10.

How would you describe your dance moves?

There is nothing that can describe my dance moves, as I have none.

Marina Rogova

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

The Boys & Girls Club is able to give parents at least ten extra hands and hearts to help care for their kids.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

My husband, Matt, volunteers on the board. Slyly, without my knowledge, he avoided being selected for the show by throwing me in front of him.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

In my younger years, I played piano/keyboard with a musical group and we played for a few weddings and events.

How would you describe your dance moves?

Fresh. Funky. Exhausting!

The Boys & Girls Club means as much to our community as gas stations. It’s a place for young kids as well as teens to have a place to escape a troubled reality. A place to have fun and enjoy life with their peers.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

It’s a great fundraiser and way to broadcast and showcase my God-given talent of dance to inspire, entertain, and raise money for the kids in our community.

I love the movie Jurassic Park and I open doors for strangers.

Smooth and entertaining.

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

Beyond being an asset to families in need of after-school guidance, the Boys & Girls Club provides a unique opportunity for youth to build relationships and improve social skills, and develop positive relationships with adults and their peers. But perhaps more importantly, it gives them a chance to explore talents and learn the tools to address challenges and opportunities through peer interaction and programs.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

Quite simply: I like the program and felt this was a unique way in which to contribute and help bring awareness to the program. Also, because I wanted to take on a new challenge and explore an art form of which I have no knowledge. I also enjoy a creative challenge and putt yourself at the direction of another individual, and learn through the process.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

I’m a pretty open book, but perhaps people don’t know I was a vocal performance major in college before I entered the culinary field.

How would you describe your dance moves?

Pathetic, currently, but thanks to Kelsey’s direction, hopefully passable by the time we perform.

Kelsey Claire

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

The Boys & Girls Club provides a safe place of refuge and resource for kids and youth in our community that they might not otherwise know how to find. Additionally, it offers invaluable support, guidance, and strength to parents and families as they seek positive and encouraging opportunities for their children.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

Because as someone who grew up in this community and as a children’s theater director in the community, I’m always grateful to support any and all causes that provide a positive environment for children and youth to grow, learn, and discover who they are.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

People don’t always realize I’m physically strong because I’m very short and seem like I’m smaller at first glance … until I flex! But I work out really hard every morning and feel very blessed to have a strong body.

How would you describe your dance moves?

Our dance moves are very jazzy, very musical theater and very “blue cat strut” style!

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

The Boys & Girls Club represents a very fun and safe place for children where they can interact, play, mature, and experience other children in a safe and structured environment. It is an especially important place, for without it, children would be left on their own after school, where the opportunity for negative influences abounds.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

Actually, Gerald Szostak blackmailed me! Gerald believes, “Whatever happens in Las Vegas is simply a unique opportunity to raise dollars for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Arizona!”

What’s something people don’t know about you?

As an altar boy, I felt it my duty to taste test the wine before the priest gave communion.

How would you describe your dance moves?

Erratic, stiff, and quite active, but I’m getting better!

Rachele Smith

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

When I was growing up, my parents weren’t always the best when dealing with life and their divorce, and I needed a place of refuge to escape the adult conflict. I was fortunate and found dance during that difficult time. I believe today so many more kids deal with this same issue and need a safe place to just be a kid. The Boys & Girls Club offers that safe place with so many more opportunities to help elevate children of all ages.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

I have always had a heart for helping others and using my dance talents to do so feels like such a win/win. Plus, any time I have the opportunity to bring fresh bones into the world of dance (for example, a first-timer), it’s like seeing Disneyland through my five-year-old nephew’s eyes: it adds fuel to my fire and passion for dance when someone new finds their love for it.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

That’s an easy one! My superpower is that I can literally fall asleep anywhere. With my crazy travel/practice/work schedule I often find myself with small odd bits of time between gigs so I take advantage of them in the best way possible. I love my sleep and don’t always get the most, so I can sometimes be found in the corner, snuggled up in a ball catching some beauty rest. It’s the best realistic superpower of all.

How would you describe your dance moves?

We are having a blast! Our routine is so fun and full of sass. We are telling a story while challenging ourselves to really define our movement and stay true to the core fundamentals of the dance. Ken and I have the perfect relationship to carry out this routine and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.

Dan & Jamie

Dan Beck

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

The Boys & Girls Club represents a valuable resource for kids of all backgrounds to become successful citizens.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

Elena Sanwick is a personal friend of mine and was a contestant last year. My participation was a set-up, orchestrated by my wife. Elena presented me with a long-stem rose and asked if I would dance. How do you say, “no” to that?

What’s something people don’t know about you?

I like to recondition/restore old cars and old pinball machines.

How would you describe your dance moves?

A clumsy middle-aged male, with the heart of a good student.

Jamie Procknow

What does the BGCCAZ mean to our community?

The Boys & Girls Club is a beacon of hope for the youth and families it serves. Their programs provide participants with opportunities for personal growth and education, and therefore it opens their eyes to a new world full of possibilities previously unknown to them.

What made you say, “Yes” to Dancing for the Stars?

When an opportunity to serve such a stand-out program comes your way, the desire to say, “yes” seems like the appropriate response. This event helps tremendously, in the endeavor to keep the Boys & Girls Club flourishing. And, as the Club does so much for our community, we as a community must also pour back into it. And I might add, whether we are dancing, voting, or taking part in some other fashion, it’s an honor.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

I’m such an open book! I enjoy history, art, culture, music! Life! I know music that no one my age knows (because it’s WAY before my time—from the 1800s to today). My music tastes range from classical to heavy rap and most things in between.

How would you describe your dance moves?

Theatrical, or maybe dramatic.
