For Jessye Johnson, leadership has never been about titles or recognition. It has always been about service, advocacy, and creating meaningful change for those who need it most.
As Executive Director of Verde Valley Sanctuary, Johnson has dedicated her career to supporting survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and trauma while strengthening the communities they call home. Her work recently earned statewide recognition when she was selected as a member of the prestigious Flinn-Brown Fellowship through the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership, joining a cohort of civic-minded leaders committed to shaping Arizona’s future.
Johnson’s journey to leadership began with a deep commitment to justice and public service. Early in her education and career, she witnessed firsthand how trauma, poverty, and systemic barriers could impact individuals seeking safety and stability. Those experiences inspired her to pursue a career focused on advocacy, support services, and building stronger systems of care for vulnerable populations.
A Colorado native, Johnson moved to Arizona with her family in 1991 after completing cancer treatment. What began as a fresh start eventually became home. She attended college in Arizona, met her husband, raised two children, and ultimately relocated to the Verde Valley after accepting the leadership role at Verde Valley Sanctuary. Today, she considers the move one of the best decisions her family has ever made.
Under Johnson’s leadership, Verde Valley Sanctuary continues to provide life-changing services throughout the region, including emergency shelter, advocacy, prevention education, legal support, and resources for survivors rebuilding their lives. Beyond direct services, the organization works closely with schools, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and community partners to address violence prevention and create long-term solutions for families in crisis.
Johnson believes the impact extends far beyond the individuals served.
“When survivors are supported and empowered, families become stronger, children experience greater stability, and communities become safer and more connected,” she explains.
Her leadership philosophy centers on resilience, empathy, authenticity, and integrity. She believes effective leaders listen carefully, build meaningful relationships, and create opportunities for others to grow. One lesson that has shaped her leadership most is understanding that leadership is not about pleasing everyone.
“Leadership requires integrity, courage, and a willingness to make thoughtful decisions based on values and long-term impact rather than approval,” Johnson says.
While her professional accomplishments are significant, Johnson says her greatest achievement is raising her two children alongside her husband. Parenthood, she shares, has taught her patience, adaptability, humility, and the importance of leading by example.
Today, she is especially excited about expanding services for sexual assault survivors throughout the Verde Valley and Yavapai County. Her goal is to increase access to trauma-informed care, advocacy, forensic services, and healing resources, particularly in rural communities where support can be limited.
Her recent selection as a Flinn-Brown Fellow will provide additional opportunities to engage with policymakers and community leaders across Arizona while bringing new knowledge and resources back to the Verde Valley. Johnson joins an influential network of leaders working to address Arizona’s most pressing challenges through collaboration, education, and civic engagement.
Outside of her professional life, Johnson has a passion that surprises many people: music. A classically trained singer who once considered pursuing opportunities with the Metropolitan Opera, she continues to share a love of music with her husband and children, often attending live concerts together and creating lasting family memories.
Whether advocating for survivors, strengthening community partnerships, mentoring future leaders, or helping shape statewide conversations, Jessye Johnson continues to lead with compassion, courage, and purpose—making a lasting impact throughout the Verde Valley and beyond.
