Summer is here!

As many people look forward to the warm weather approaching, they also may already be experiencing how the Prescott area’s dry climate can impact their hair and skin, causing increased dryness.

Here are a few tips to help protect hair and skin against the harsh Arizona sun:

The first and best tip is to always cover up—wear a hat! This not only protects the skin and hair against UV rays, but it also helps the scalp maintain some moisture. As the sun beats down and the wind whips around, keeping the hair tucked under a nice hat will keep the ends from getting dry and the color from fading. Alternately, wear a soft braid or loose twist. Variety is best; avoid always wearing the same hat or up-do, which can cause breakage by putting pressure on the same strands of hair over and over again. Pay close attention to hair bands: these also can cause breakage if worn too tightly.

Second, always use a heat protectant (even on days the hair air dries). This will coat the hair shaft, adding shine and protection. Ask a haircare professional for product recommendations. One standout: L’anza HO Oil, which protects hair up to 450 degrees without weighing it down. It can also be used as a conditioning treatment (just dab a little in the palm, then rub deeply into the scalp). It is so great and cost effective when a product can be used in more than one way!

Third, use a deep condition hair mask. Moi Moi Mask by L’anza or the Kure by Amika are perfect for this time of year!

Finally, try to not shampoo every day. Most importantly, use a professional shampoo product designed to create a pH balance.

These tips will help protect the hair’s integrity, which means fantastic summer hair, even in Arizona’s dry climate!
