Honoring the Granite Mountain 19 while fostering awareness about wildland firefighting and fire prevention

Nestled within the Pine Ridge Marketplace in Prescott, Arizona, the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew (GMIHC) Learning and Tribute Center stands as a poignant testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the 19 elite firefighters who perished in the Yarnell Hill Fire on June 30, 2013. This all-volunteer nonprofit center not only memorializes these heroes but also serves as an educational hub, fostering awareness about wildland firefighting and fire prevention.

Established in 2018, the Center was born from a community’s desire to preserve and honor the artifacts and memorabilia left in tribute to the fallen crew. Its mission is clear: to tell the story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, display and house artifacts, and educate visitors about wildland fire, firefighting, and prevention. Visitors can explore a range of exhibits, from personal stories and photographs to firefighting gear and educational materials.

The Center operates with the dedication of volunteer docents and is open to the public on Fridays from 2 to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 1to 4 p.m. For those seeking a more personalized experience, private group tours are available outside regular hours, accommodating groups ranging from small gatherings to larger assemblies. These tours offer an intimate exploration of the Hotshots’ legacy, guided by passionate volunteers who bring their stories to life. To schedule a tour, interested parties can email Pilar Hemry at Pilar.Hemry@gmihc19.org

Those looking to volunteer, who have a passion for service and a few hours to spare each month, can make a meaningful impact. The Center is welcoming (and will train) volunteers. Everyone is welcome.

As the 12th anniversary of the Yarnell Hill Fire approaches, the Center invites the community to reflect, remember, and engage. Whether through a visit, a private tour, or volunteering, your participation helps keep the legacy of the Granite Mountain 19 alive and helps us educate the community.

Join The Center for the GMIHC’s anniversary celebration on Sunday, June 29, and consider visiting the Center on the fire’s anniversary Monday, June 30.
