Prescott Frontier Days®, Inc – World’s Oldest Rodeo® Celebrates Rodeo Cowgirls and Their Spirit, Skill, and Perseverance

By Donna Werking

Prescott Frontier Days®, Inc- World’s Oldest Rodeo®, is gearing up to celebrate its 138th year in 2025 with an empowering and historic theme: “Women in Rodeo.” This theme pays tribute to the remarkable contributions of rodeo cowgirls, highlighting their indomitable spirit, skill, and perseverance in a traditionally male-dominated sport.

The history of rodeo cowgirls is rich and inspiring. In the early 20th century, women began to carve out their place in rodeo events, despite significant societal and cultural barriers. Pioneers like Fannie Sperry Steele, Mabel Strickland, and Prairie Rose Henderson broke into the scene, competing alongside men in bronc riding, trick riding, and steer roping. These trailblazing women set the stage for future generations, proving that talent and tenacity know no gender.

One of the most thrilling and prominent rodeo events featuring women is barrel racing. It showcases the incredible speed and agility of both horse and rider. In barrel racing, cowgirls race against the clock as they navigate their horses through a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. Precision, control, and a deep bond between the rider and horse are crucial for success in this high-stakes competition. Barrel racing has become a staple of rodeo events, capturing the hearts of spectators with its breathtaking displays of athleticism and grace.

Another event gaining popularity is breakaway calf roping. In this timed event, the cowgirl must lasso a calf as quickly as possible. Unlike traditional calf roping, where the rider dismounts to tie the calf, breakaway roping ends as soon as the rope breaks away from the saddle horn. This event highlights the cowgirl’s roping skills, speed, and accuracy. It is a testament to the evolution of rodeo, showcasing how women’s events have grown and diversified over the years.

The “Women in Rodeo” theme at Prescott Frontier Days is not only a celebration of historical achievements but also a nod to the future. Today’s rodeo cowgirls continue to push boundaries and redefine what it means to be a competitor in the rodeo arena. Organizations like the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) and Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) have been instrumental in promoting and organizing events for female athletes, ensuring they receive the recognition and opportunities they deserve.

Prescott Frontier Days’ commitment to honoring these incredible women reflects the rodeo’s inclusive and progressive spirit. By shining a spotlight on the contributions and achievements of rodeo cowgirls, the World’s Oldest Rodeo continues to be a beacon of tradition, excellence, and innovation in the world of rodeo. As the 138th year unfolds, spectators and participants alike will celebrate the enduring legacy and bright future of women in rodeo.

The 138th year of World’s Oldest Rodeo will run June 30 to July 6, 2025, at the Prescott Frontier Days rodeo grounds. Tickets on sale only at www.worldsoldestrodeo.com.
