Multiple surgeries on both her lumbar and thoracic spine succeeded at stabilizing Darleen’s back, but they didn’t get rid of her intense pain. She tried opioids and back injection treatments, but the pain persisted until she started treatments from Dr. Thomas Masters at Tomar Pain Centers.
Dr. Masters’ holistic approach to Darleen’s treatment included stretching, aerobic exercises, nutritional guidelines, and manipulation therapy.
“The results were dramatic and within a week, the pain that I have been living with for five years was gone – completely gone,” related Darleen, who prefers to use only her first name to protect her medical privacy. “I immediately stopped all the opioid prescriptions and have not had the need for them for over 60 days.”
Dr. Masters has been helping people like Darleen for more than two decades. Because he is trained as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) instead of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), he focuses on providing a holistic and preventative approach with all of his patients. Doctors of Osteopathy also receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system, which is the body’s interconnected system of nerves, muscles and bones that make up two-thirds of its mass.
Tomar Pain Centers use a variety of interventional therapies to help the musculoskeletal system transition into a more balanced state of alignment and positioning, thus providing healing naturally. The therapies help patients tolerate exercise and reduce their dependencies on drugs.
“Using pharmaceuticals doesn’t even address the problem, it simply masks it temporarily,” Dr. Masters said. “Your body wants to be in a healthy state, and I can help achieve that. My goal with each patient is to move them from a dysfunctional path to a healthy pathway.”
Tomar patients get relief from a variety of chronic and acute conditions including back pain, headaches, sciatica, arthritis, sports injuries, fibromyalgia and autoimmune diseases. These conditions are more common in women, Dr. Masters observed.
Dr. Masters prides himself on spending enough time with each patient to go in depth and really analyze their circumstances. He has lived in Arizona most of his life, earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Arizona State University. He earned his medical degree in Osteopathy from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. He worked as an osteopathic surgeon for years, and for the past 15 years he has focused on pain management to help people with chronic pain in Prescott and Casa Grande.

“I had pain in my back from two pinched nerves. I went to another pain center and all they did was shots and pain pills. They worked for maybe a week or so. After going to Tomar Pain Centers with Dr. Masters six months ago, I have been feeling great. He put me on a program with diet, vitamins, and stretching, along with shots that don’t destroy my bones. As a result, I have lost weight and feel great. Plus, Dr. Masters, his nurse Sue and front office girls are great. I am treated like a person, not a number.”
