Modern Craft Tattoo & Piercing: Bringing Creative Body Modification to Downtown Prescott

For Prescott native Feliz Manzanedo, owner of Modern Craft Tattoo & Piercing, the opportunity to run her dream business in a downtown location could not be more perfect. Manzanedo says, “I grew up a mile from the Square, and it was always my childhood dream to have a shop downtown! We have two giant windows where our clients are able to people-watch and overlook our city’s heart.”

Tattoo artist Becka Spillane agrees, “Downtown is amazing and always so lively. Everyone is so friendly and excited to be here, that it makes for such a great atmosphere for creating art.”

In addition to the two, the team also includes piercer Keely DeLander who specializes in Tooth Gems and Needle-lees Hyaluron Gel Lip Injections. All of the women share a passion for art—and for bringing someone’s artistic vision to life.

Says Manzanedo, “After I graduated from Yavapai College with a degree in Fine Arts with Honors, I began getting commissions from people who wanted me to design their tattoos.  I later found myself apprenticing at a local shop.”

While Manzanedo began her apprenticeship in 2016, Spillane has been tattooing for seven years. Celebrating the shop’s second year in 2020, Spillane says, “We have a very unique style—it’s relaxing and spa-like. We make our customers feel cozy and at home.” Adds Manzanedo, “We have the highest expectations for our sanitation, BioWaste removal, blood borne pathogen certifications, and one-use disposal methods, all of which keep our shop running at highest possible efficiency and cleanliness.”

In the coming years, the women look forward to expanding their offerings with more specialists and artists. Says Manzanedo, “We can’t wait to share with our communities all that we have planned!”

Soul Ride Bike Shop and Tap Room: Creating a Niche to Support Prescott’s Mountain Biking Community

A recreational love for the sport of mountain biking drew Kate Phelan and Cina McConaughy together when they started biking with friends to decompress, find peace of mind and experience nature through the extensive trail system in Prescott. With a desire to serve the community and share the impact they felt through biking, the co-owners created Soul Ride in 2015 offering tours, skills classes and clinics. They are the first in town to offer mountain bike youth programs, and programs geared toward women. Phelan says, “Our monthly beginner skills clinics for women help advance the love of biking by gaining the necessary skills to stay confident and stable while riding.” Soul Ride recently added a craft beer and wine tap room to the existing bike shop as part of their model. Says McConaughy, “On perfect Prescott days, our customers enjoy grabbing a cold beverage and sitting outside on our beautiful patio enjoying the downtown view and connecting with others.”

Located in Prescott’s SoMo District, Phelan says, “We have access to a large number of tourists and we love giving trail advice for that unique Prescott experience.” McConaughy adds, “Downtown has been a great move for us after two previous locations. We now have more parking and exposure, as well as the opportunity to participate in the annual festivities.” As a woman-owned business in a primarily male-dominated sport, Soul Ride received national recognition this year by winning the Londonderry Award through Quality Biking Products. Say Phelan, “We never dreamed we would have such an impact on the mountain biking industry and for women entrepreneurs.” Adds McConaughy, “At the shop, we take pride in creating a space for everyone to feel welcome whether someone is brand new to the sport or an expert—it’s all bike to us!”
