Local photographer and entrepreneur has spent 20 years striking a balance while building her business
Prescott Woman Magazine chatted with Michelle Lewis of Mama Bear Studios to find out what makes her enjoy being a part of the Prescott Chamber of Commerce and how it benefits her business.
PWM: How long have you been a member of the Prescott Chamber, and what do you enjoy most about being part of this organization?
Michelle: I became a member of the Prescott Chamber two years ago, and I greatly appreciate the networking opportunities they offer.
PWM: In your experience, how does the Prescott Chamber differ from other local groups?
Michelle: The Prescott Chamber creates a welcoming atmosphere, ensuring friendly gatherings while effectively facilitating business.
PWM: Tell us about what brought you to Prescott and your employment role.
Michelle: I relocated here three years ago with my husband. After he settled in, I continued my photography business here, excited to capture the four seasons and the area’s beautiful scenery.
PWM: Do you have any kids, significant others, fur babies, or family members in the area?
Michelle: My husband and I have three children; two are adults thriving in their careers, and our youngest still lives at home. We also have two grandchildren and an indoor cat who’s part of the family.
PWM: What initiatives or projects are you currently involved in that aim to uplift our community?
Michelle: As a photographer, my schedule fluctuates with events and client availability, making it challenging to offer assistance. However, I make time weekly to coach my daughter’s club soccer team.
PWM: What inspired you to start your business, and how has that inspiration evolved?
Michelle: My photography journey began with my father, an avid hobbyist, and hands-on access to a home darkroom. After earning a photography degree, I launched my business during the early 2000s tech boom. Despite the internet transforming the industry, my passion for capturing people’s essence has remained. Over two decades, I’ve built my business and refined my skills.
PWM: How do you balance the demands of running a business with personal life, especially in the context of societal expectations?
Michelle: Balancing work, life, and family is challenging with my non-nine-to-five schedule. My calendar is essential for planning day-to-day life. A crucial tip for balance is learning to decline extra commitments.
PWM: What do you wish you had known when first starting your business, and what advice do you have for women considering launching their own local business?
Michelle: My advice is make your business searchable online, establish a presence on relevant platforms, and understand your target market.
PWM: Is there a common misconception about women in business that you would like to address?
Michelle: A common misconception is that success comes quickly. Building a business takes time—I’ve spent 20 years growing mine. Patience, industry knowledge, and persistence are essential for long-term success, not instant results.
