Small-group and one-on-one targeted instruction are components of academic intervention. The four women on the Intervention Team at Granite Mountain Upper Elementary School within the Prescott Unified School District (PUSD) do so with continual dedication and passion. Assisting students who struggle academically, this team offers proactive support by tailoring plans that empower students to overcome challenges. Through these interventions, the team also tracks and monitors academic progression, communicates with teachers about goals and strategies, builds partnerships with instructors, and maintains a focus on improvement.
Jessica Kissinger, in her 11th year of teaching and third year as Math Interventionist said, “It’s gratifying to experience the students’ confidence in math; I help them transport self-doubt into self-belief.”
Lesley Russell, Assistant Math Interventionist and 19-year educator added, “In getting students to overcome their dislike of math, I tell them I felt the same as a kid! I share tricks and shortcuts that have made it easier for me to learn. Encouragement is a big part of what we do, and celebrating little victories goes a long way.”
Rhiannon Haskell, in her sixth year as Reading Interventionist and 13 years total with PUSD, stated that witnessing student confidence and progression is the best part of her role. “It’s not just about improving their reading skills; it’s about helping them gain the confidence they need in all areas of life.”
Emily Groeber, a six-year Assistant Reading Interventionist agreed: “It’s so fulfilling when the kids realize how their efforts can greatly increase their skills, often in a short amount of time. Their pride in themselves is awesome to witness. We do a lot of celebrating.”
PUSD Superintendent Clark Tenney offered team validation: “When kids do not initially master key concepts, academic interventions ensure the success of our students. You won’t find a more proactive, cohesive, and successful Intervention Team than at Granite Mountain Upper Elementary School. Jessica, Emily, Rhiannon, and Lesley are amazing ladies who determine the individual needs of every student and work hard to target those needs for success.”
Kesley Secor, District Assistant Superintendent of Instruction said, “These women offer dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment that inspires students and colleagues alike. They’re leading a culture of proactive support.”
On the importance of collaboration Rhiannon stated, “We share a common goal: to see growth and progress in our students, no matter how small or large their successes may be.”
Lesley added, “We are all dedicated to the students. Mrs. Kissinger and Mrs. Haskell make their classrooms welcoming and calm. That really helps students do their best work.”
Emily stated, “I am happy I can add my skills to the team to share our collective love of reading and math with our fifth and sixth graders.”
Jessica added, “Together, we create innovative methods, solve challenges and enhance the learning experience for all.”
