Agape House of Prescott: Rebuilding the Lives of Families Living in Crisis

You don’t need an economic event such as COVID to create a financial crisis.  Long before quarantines and temporary closures, 1 in 30 children in Yavapai County were without a place to call home, and 7 out of 10 Arizonans were one paycheck away from being homeless.

Agape House of Prescott is working to change those statistics.

Agape House is a local 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that rebuilds the lives of families living in crisis.  The organization provides much more than a home; it rebuilds and transforms lives by providing the foundation and tools for families to live successfully and independently. The team at Agape House works tirelessly to give hope and mentor the families, giving them a new chance at life and an opportunity for a bright future.

Since 2015, the Agape House of Prescott has served families by teaching them life skills and mentoring them on relationships and household management. It has also given hope through discipleship and teaching them about Christ.  The achievement of the Agape House program is evident in its success rate. An astonishing 86% of the families continue to live independent, successful lives one year after graduating from the Agape House program.

The program at Agape House is six months, but the length of time required to rebuild varies per family.  On average, a family will need nine to eleven months of interim housing to save enough for the first and last month’s rent to move to their own place.

Below are a couple of stories of the lives that have been positively changed by the Agape House.

The Agape House team recently journeyed with a father who has deeply struggled to provide his family’s stability.  The father, wife, 3-year-old daughter, and infant had been homeless for more than four years.  With deep emotion, the father said he would do anything for his family. The Agape House team mentored the couple, established a budget, and gave the family life skills that will last long after the temporary home provided by Agape House.  The family is well on its way to a successful life, saving money for their own place, and enjoying their family as they had never experienced before. The father’s appreciation for second chances is inspiring.

After years of struggling, enduring heartbreaking financial setbacks, living on couches and floors, a single mother and her three girls finally found hope.  Agape House moved them into an apartment and has given them a new beginning.  This single mother now has renewed hope for the future. “I can’t believe this is real, I think I am still in shock. Before Agape House, I didn’t know what I was going to do, or where I was going to go. God took care of my kids and me. I could have never dreamed that it would have been this good. So much better than I could have imagined.”
