Telling the stories that shape our community.
A Focus on the Future
For Tracy and Jeremiah Scheffer, 2024 was a tough year. Still, it highlighted how much they have to be grateful for, and they’re moving into 2025 with greater inspiration and deeper love.
Not only did the couple—owners of Blushing Cactus Photography—endure significant losses of people close to them, but they also grappled with a major health issue when Tracy’s heart went into failure in September.
During an interview in their cozy Prescott house in December, the two of them talked about how they love what they do—and how they plan to move forward with intention, leaving a legacy and nurturing the connections that sustain them.
“The fact that I get to continue to do what I love—oh, thank God—and do it with the one I love,” Tracy said. “How special is that, that we get to live this dream together? We don’t take it for granted.”
The Fairweather Social Bar: A New Creative Gathering Spot
Nestled in the heart of Prescott, the Fairweather Social Bar has emerged as a vibrant new venue catering to locals and visitors seeking a welcoming atmosphere. Opened by industry veterans Aaron Grafe and Lindsay Fox, this establishment is designed to be more than just a bar; it aims to foster community connections and provide a space where people can unwind and be creative without the rowdiness often associated with other nightlife spots.

A Living Legacy in Prescott
Nestled within the Pine Ridge Marketplace in Prescott, Arizona, the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew (GMIHC) Learning and Tribute Center stands as a poignant testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the 19 elite firefighters who perished in the Yarnell Hill Fire on June 30, 2013. This all-volunteer nonprofit center not only memorializes these heroes but also serves as an educational hub, fostering awareness about wildland firefighting and fire prevention.
Author Michaela Carter on surrealism, Prescott, and art
Acclaimed author Michaela Carter moved to Prescott nineteen years ago, drawn to the stranger side of our town. She was attracted to the thriving community of artists who were embracing the woods and the creeks in their work. Drum circles, fire dancers, stilt walkers, and the summer solstice festival Tsunami On the Square, as well as the javelinas trotting down the street and the coyotes howling into the starry nights, fed her creative spirit.
Building Brands That Feel Aligned
Stephanie Lauderback believes branding is about trust — not trends.
As founder and lead strategist of Studiolit in Prescott Valley, she helps small businesses clarify who they are and communicate it confidently. Her work goes far beyond logos and color palettes. She educates business owners on strategic positioning, long-term thinking, and sustainable growth. That passion for education extends into the classroom — Stephanie also teaches design at Yavapai Community College, where she helps the next generation of creatives develop their own strategic foundation.
Compassionate Care
Since 1982, Adult Care Services (ACS), a local nonprofit, has provided essential care to adults living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, and other cognitive or physical challenges.
One of its key programs, the Susan J. Rheem Adult Day Center, operates Monday through Friday and provides a variety of services aimed at enriching the lives of participants and fostering a sense of purpose, well-being, and community. These services include daily exercise, meaningful activities, and social interaction. A dedicated team of nurses offers wellness support and ensure the health and safety of each participant. The center boasts a beautiful new garden complete with raised beds, walking paths, a sports area, and a splashing water garden. The center enhances the lives of its attendees and offers much-needed respite to caregivers, allowing them time to rest and recharge from the demands of around-the-clock caregiving.
Bringing the Past to Life
If you wonder how Sedona used to look as you drive up Highway 89A through its busy business district, a Red Rock Loop History Tour with the Sedona Historical Society offers you that view into the colorful past.
The historical society conducts an annual fall tour in town as well as an annual spring tour up Oak Creek Canyon that will impress anyone with an interest in local history – especially when you couple the tours with the spectacular backdrop of the Red Rock formations and gorgeous canyon.
Hydrangea Pom-Pom Party
Gorgeous hydrangeas! These showstoppers bring a burst of color to any garden. From classic Bigleaf to the climbing Miranda, there’s a hydrangea for every space. Bigleaf hydrangeas change color with your soil’s pH–blue in acidic soil and pink in alkaline. Climbing hydrangeas add vertical interest, while Oakleaf dazzles with its fall foliage. Peegee hydrangeas can even be trained into trees! Smooth hydrangeas like Annabelle are known for their massive blooms. Remember, pruning depends on whether they bloom on old or new wood. Hydrangeas thrive in well-drained soil with plenty of compost, preferring bright shade in our Arizona climate.
Breaking Barriers and Refreshing Souls
One of the definitions for recreation is “refreshment of strength and spirits.” Through the outdoor adventure of watersports for adapted athletes and their families, that’s exactly what Arizona Adaptive Water Sports (AAWS) provides for people with disabilities—and their families.
Jo Crawford, AAWS Founder and Chief Visionary Officer, said during a recent interview that through the organization, she strives to empower athletes; not just to try watersports, but to conquer fear and take charge of their own health and lives.
“To watch these kids starting outdoor adventure and having them do this stuff that takes a lot of courage,” she said. “What happens to them later on in life is that they say, ‘Don’t tell me I can’t do something.’”
She wants people to know that “fear is a liar.”
