Telling the stories that shape our community.

Prescott Woman Magazine is Northern Arizona’s premier women-focused media platform, dedicated to celebrating the voices, stories, and impact of the Prescott Quad Cities. What began as a lifestyle magazine has evolved into a dynamic, digital-forward brand rooted in storytelling, connection, and community uplift.

We spotlight the women who lead, create, serve, and inspire — entrepreneurs, artists, educators, advocates, and changemakers whose work shapes the place we call home. Through powerful profiles, thoughtful features, and meaningful conversations, we go beyond the surface to share stories that matter.

Today, our storytelling lives across multiple platforms. Through the She Spark Podcast, we amplify real conversations around leadership, purpose, growth, and connection. Through the Prescott Woman Awards, we honor women whose courage, compassion, and contributions make a lasting difference. And through Portraits with Purpose, we combine storytelling and service, using photography to give back and uplift local nonprofits.

More than a magazine, Prescott Woman is a movement — a trusted platform for women’s voices, a connector of community, and a catalyst for positive change. We believe stories have power, visibility creates opportunity, and when women rise, communities thrive.

Join us as we continue to celebrate Prescott — digitally, boldly, and with heart — one story, one spark, and one woman at a time.

Finding Freedom

Finding Freedom

Since 1980, Stepping Stones Agencies has provided around-the-clock advocacy support and safe shelter for adults and children experiencing domestic violence in West Yavapai County. That’s 45 years of safe nights of sleep, supportive fellowship, and finding freedom from all forms of abuse.

Faith House (now Stepping Stones Agencies) opened its doors as the first domestic violence shelter for women and children in Northern Arizona. With 10 beds plus five cribs, women and children were able to find safety and support in the rural Prescott area.

Two decades later, Stepping Stones expanded to a larger safe shelter campus with 16 beds and five cribs for emergency shelter. Additionally, the move added four two-bedroom affordable transitional housing apartments. With more space, Stepping Stones was able to serve more families and added additional advocates to provide 24/7/365 services in the new space.

Today, in addition to the safe campus, Stepping Stones has also added five additional affordable transitional apartments (for a total of nine) to serve even more families each year.

Lynn Kaylor – 2021

Lynn Kaylor jokes that she wrote her first romance in junior high. It was a short, sweet historical story of two twelve-year-olds—the boy Native American and the girl a white settler.

Then real life took over, and she had a long career as a software developer for companies such as IBM, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Beech Aircraft.

The Healing Power of Kindness

The Healing Power of Kindness

In October, I attended a Prevent Child Abuse America board meeting in Chicago. Part of the time was focused on celebrating the life of SuEllen Fried, a beloved Prevent Child Abuse America lifetime board member, who passed away on October 3 at the age of 92.

The stories shared by the staff and board members who knew her were a gift to listen to. It was moving to feel how she had impacted so many. It wasn’t only the work she did that had changed lives, it was who she was that changed lives.

I didn’t know SuEllen well, but the few times I had met her were unforgettable. She was the kind of person who would make you feel deeply, unquestionably valuable and important. She made you feel seen. She called out the best in you because of her boundless, unshakable kindness.

Kindness has that power. Kindness is deeply memorable. And kindness can heal and change people, even when nothing else can.

A Little Bit of Everything

A Little Bit of Everything

You won’t find any expired equines at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, but the riverfront scenery is just as memorable as the unusual name.

The Ireys family required the state to keep the ranch name when they sold it in 1973. The family chose the moniker after touring several Verde Valley properties in the 1940s. Calvin “Cap” Ireys asked his kids which place they wanted to buy and they replied, “The one with the dead horse.” He bought the place in 1950 and the name stuck.

Today, the ranch looks a bit different but retains its rare riparian beauty. It spreads out along the Verde River just across the waterway from Cottonwood’s Riverfront Park. Three lagoons keep fresh with river water via the 1870s-era Hickey Ditch water rights that came with the park. A park store, ramadas, playground, restrooms, campsites, and cabins are connected by a system of trails that links to neighboring federal and state lands. Visitors enjoy fishing, swimming, hiking, bird watching, and horseback riding; an on-site riding concessionaire makes the latter easy for everyone.

Ceremonial cocoa to help us pause, create space, and connect to the quiet and stillness of winter

Ceremonial cocoa to help us pause, create space, and connect to the quiet and stillness of winter

We can trace the history of chocolate back to the Olmec, Aztec, and Mayan civilizations of southern Mexico. The creation of the universally loved candy bar, originating with the beans of a cacao tree (known as Theobrama Cacao), is a beautiful and fascinating cultural discovery, one that connects us to ancient traditions and the botanical world.

The Theobroma Cacao tree produces large, multi-colored fruit pods, filled with as many as 40 cacao beans in each. Cacao beans are husked and roasted, then referred to as “cocoa” vs. “cacao.” Long before marshmallow-topped hot cocoa became a winter tradition, there was once a very different style of chocolatey drink.

Summer Giving

Summer Giving

Summer is here and Vitalant is already feeling the heat; traditionally donors are in short supply during the summer months because of vacations and other activities. But it is important to remember that patients in 62 Arizona hospitals are depending upon 600 blood donors every day – even during the summer.

“The demand for blood is constant,” said Anna Oliver, Senior Director of Donor Recruitment for Vitalant.
