Telling the stories that shape our community.
‘You Deserve to Feel Safe’
The Yavapai Family Advocacy Center’s (YFAC) mission statement reads: “to reduce trauma to victims of abuse by providing a safe and supportive environment and facilitating a team approach to advocacy, investigation, and prosecution.”
But the people behind the organization describe their work a bit differently; they say they guide their clients to find their voice, take back their power, and rediscover their worth and value (or discover them for the first time).

Amy Lukavics – 2020
A Prescott resident for thirty-one years, Amy Lukavics has always been intrigued by scary stories that explore the darker side of humanity. A lifelong bookworm who discovered Stephen King on her mother’s bookshelf, she landed her first book deal with a major publishing house at age twenty-six and has since published four young adult horror novels, multiple short stories, and five children’s chapter books under the pen name Scarlet Varlow. She is internationally published in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Iran.
A Personal Mission

Permission to Rest: Nothing Blooms All Year
It’s spring, which means the Prescott area is once again painted with all the rainbow colors, thanks to the blooming of so many wildflowers. Part of what makes this season unique is that the flowers have spent the winter dormant. They’ve been resting.
What if we could take a note from nature and permit ourselves to rest, too? We need to free ourselves from the tyranny of productivity, especially as the weather warms up and many activities resume.
My dear friend Emma, who works as an elementary school teacher in Detroit and lives her life with exemplary reflectiveness, shared a quote with me years ago that continues to resonate with me:
“Be patient with yourself. Nothing in nature blooms all year.”
‘We Were So Grateful’
The war in Ukraine has been stirring up memories for Mai Nguyen.
The impending North Vietnamese military invasion of South Vietnam forced Mai’s family to flee to the United States in 1975 when Mai was six years old, and she’s never returned. Vietnam has been a socialist republic controlled by communists ever since.
But you won’t hear Mai lamenting her life’s path.
Green Thrills
he easiest gardening is in containers. Tall plants turn ordinary container gardens into living art, adding height, variety, and drama. My designer rule for stylish containers is “thriller, spiller, then fillers.”
Combine a tall, “thrilling” focal point with plants spilling over the sides of your container to soften the edges. Filler plants bridge the space between. Very little potting soil should be visible when your design is complete. Plants will be touching foliage-to-foliage.
Start with a tall “thrilling” plant, and the rest of your job is easy. Here is my go-to list of tall plants that thrive in container gardens.
Is Your Stress Harming You?
We already know stress is a daily occurrence, whether it is trying to get your kids out of the house on time, being productive at work, or trying to uphold the house. We all go through it. But what if that daily stress was actually causing your health issues? Stress releases complex hormones like cortisol that stay acute in your body for hours. This is called the fight-fright-freeze response and in many situations is needed for our body to deal with what’s at hand. However, when we live in a chronic state of stress, our body lacks the ability to return to a normal state. This causes dysregulation of our parasympathetic nervous system and leads to the development of chronic health conditions.
Once enacted, this acute phase will turn itself off if you are able to regulate your stress level. The following methods are alternative and cost-effective ways to reduce stress.

Home Away from Home
Although property owners started offering vacation rentals as early as the 1950s, the trend has exploded over the past decade or so, thanks to the advent of websites like Vacation Rental by Owner and Air BnB. Between 2019 and 2020, vacation rentals increased by 75 percent in Arizona. Local property owners have joined in on the fun; Prescott Woman sat down with four of them to get the scoop.
